Phones are personal property, off-limits to Police — Lagos CP

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, has reaffirmed that no law enforcement officer has the right to search citizens’ phones on the road.

He made the statement on Thursday during the closing ceremony of the 2025 Police–Youth Dialogue Programme at Alausa, Ikeja, organised by the Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development.

“Some people put me on TikTok where I said no policeman should search your phone on the road.

“I still stand by that order,” Jimoh said, emphasising that phones are personal property.

The event, themed “The Power of Partnership: Cultural Trust and Understanding Between Youth and Law Enforcement Agencies,” brought together police officers, youth representatives, civil society actors, and government officials.

The CP described young people as the “mirror of society” and highlighted their role in shaping policies and holding institutions accountable.

Jimoh said the dialogue programme has helped bridge longstanding gaps between the police and Lagos youth.

He noted initiatives such as the appointment of information officers across all area commands and the expansion of gender units to enhance the protection of women and children.

The CP also announced a new initiative, “Bail is Free,” ensuring that bail services would now be provided at no cost across all police divisions in Lagos State.

Complimentary cards bearing his signature have been distributed to guarantee free bail services.

He urged young people to understand their legal rights, saying that knowledge of the law would reduce friction with law enforcement.

“Partnership is not just a slogan; it is an active process of dialogue, respect, and adaptability. We listen more, judge less, and work together for a common goal,” he stated.

According to Jimoh, the programme reflects Lagos State’s commitment to proactive community policing and youth empowerment, fostering trust, accountability, and security in the commercial hub.
