Police: Explosion in Abuja not bomb blast

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command says the explosion that occurred near a refuse dump outside the Bureau of Public Enterprise premises in the Maitama area of Abuja was not bomb related.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, said this in a statement issued on Wednesday, January 24, 2024.

Adeh noted that a rapid response team and members of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit were deployed to assess the situation after the incident on Wednesday.

She said preliminary findings revealed that an overheated metal refuse container activated under intense heat exploded and injured two of the refuse evacuators.

She said the affected refuse evacuators were receiving treatment in Maitama General Hospital.

Adeh urged the residents of Abuja to exercise caution and refrain from using metal refuse bins.

The police spokesperson advocated the use of plastic or rubber containers for waste disposal, saying they pose a reduced risk of being overheated.
