The Benue State Police Command has rescued 19 passengers abducted by suspected armed bandits along the Ohimini–Otukpo Road in Ohimini Local Government Area of the state.
According to sources, the incident occurred in the early hours of December 22, when gunmen blocked two commercial vehicles around the Mechanic Village area along the Ohimini–Otukpo axis and forced the occupants into the bush.
It was gathered that at about 2:00 a.m., a Toyota Hiace bus travelling from Oju to Ibadan with nine passengers was attacked.
Another vehicle, a Toyota Hummer bus belonging to Plateau Riders Company, driven by Igoche John from Jos, Plateau State, was also ambushed while en route from Jos to Bayelsa State with 11 passengers on board.
Upon receiving distress reports, the police swiftly mobilised patrol teams and tactical units to the area.
The operatives combed surrounding bushes, forcing the attackers to abandon the victims and flee.
As a result of the operation, 19 passengers were rescued unhurt and without the payment of any ransom.
The victims were later debriefed and allowed to continue their journeys.
However, one passenger, identified as Boniface Ndukwe from Jos, Plateau State, is still believed to be in the custody of the abductors.
Police authorities said efforts are ongoing to track down the fleeing suspects and secure the rescue of the remaining victim.
