Police rescue woman after roadside delivery in Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has rescued an unidentified woman believed to be mentally challenged after she gave birth to a baby girl by the roadside in Kwaita Village, Kwali Area Council of Abuja.

The incident occurred at about 12:30 a.m. on Friday, when operatives of the Rapid Response Squad on patrol in the Kwali axis received information about the woman, who had just delivered the baby.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, said the Officer in Charge of the Gender Unit at the Kwali Division immediately led a team to the location after receiving the alert.

According to the police, both mother and child were safely evacuated from the scene and taken to General Hospital, Kwali, where they received prompt medical care before being discharged in stable condition.

The statement added that the Officer in Charge of Welfare in the Kwali Area Council, Mr Sadiq Kwali, was contacted in line with standard welfare procedures.

Following the intervention, the mother and her newborn were handed over to the welfare authorities and relocated to the FCT Children’s Home in Wako, Gwagwalada Area Council, where they are expected to receive proper care and support.

The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, Ahmed Mohammed Sanusi, praised the officers for their swift and compassionate response.

He noted that the patrol team acted professionally to ensure the safety of both the mother and the newborn before the Gender Unit arrived at the scene.

Sanusi also urged residents to remain vigilant, show empathy to vulnerable persons, and promptly report emergencies or distress situations to the nearest police station or through the command’s emergency lines.

The rescue, according to the command, forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen emergency response and social protection for vulnerable persons across the Federal Capital Territory.
