Task force clears shanties, recovers weapons in Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has recovered dangerous weapons, dismantled illegal shanties, and impounded 20 vehicles in a major security operation at Wuse Zone 3, Abuja.

The operation, led by Tpl. Muktar Galadima, Director of the Department of Development Control, was carried out in the early hours of Wednesday, August 6, 2025, despite heavy rainfall. It followed a directive from the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, to intensify efforts in clearing criminal hideouts and illegal structures across the capital.

Galadima said the targeted area had become a serious security concern due to the proliferation of makeshift structures and illicit activities.

He noted that the land is actually designated as part of the Inner Northern Expressway corridor and was never meant for residential use.

“We’ve cleared the area of illegal occupants, many of whom are of questionable character,” he said.

“This action is in line with the Abuja Master Plan and the Minister’s directive for property owners to either develop their lands or risk revocation.”

Adamu Gwary, Director of the Department of Security Services, represented by Dr. Peter Olumuji, revealed that intelligence reports confirmed the area had become a notorious hideout for criminals.

He displayed machetes and other weapons recovered during the raid, describing how they had been used in attacks on pedestrians and motorists, particularly around the National Mosque and Zone 1 bridges.

“These are the weapons used to rob and inflict injuries on innocent citizens. The evidence is with the police,” Olumuji said.

Deborah Osho, Head of Operations at the Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS), reported that 20 vehicles were impounded, some of which were linked to “one-chance” robbery operations.

She said the vehicles would be thoroughly documented and owners penalized before release.

The FCTA plans a follow-up mop-up exercise and is urging property owners to develop their plots in accordance with government regulations or risk forfeiture.
