Tinubu pushes for fresh UK security deal

President Bola Tinubu has signalled plans for a renewed security alliance between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, highlighting the importance of bilateral cooperation in tackling terrorism and regional instability.

Tinubu made this known on Wednesday night during a state banquet hosted by Charles III at Windsor Castle, as part of his ongoing state visit to the UK.

He disclosed that discussions with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer would focus on Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts and broader security challenges across West Africa, particularly threats emanating from the Sahel region.

“Our West African region faces complex terrorism challenges with roots in the Sahel. Nigeria carries an enormous responsibility to help safeguard regional stability,” Tinubu said, stressing that partnership with the UK remains critical.

Reflecting on his personal history, the President expressed gratitude to the UK for offering him refuge during the military regime of Sani Abacha in the 1990s. He recalled how the Metropolitan Police provided protection amid threats from the junta, describing the gesture as deeply humbling.

Tinubu, a former pro-democracy activist, was among those who fled Nigeria during the Abacha era—a period marked by widespread human rights abuses, including the execution of environmental activist Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other Ogoni leaders in 1995.

At the banquet attended by senior members of the British royal family, including Camilla, Prince William, and Catherine, Princess of Wales, Tinubu emphasised the enduring historical and institutional ties between both countries.

He noted that Nigeria’s legal and parliamentary systems continue to draw from British traditions, particularly English common law and constitutional practices.

The President also highlighted the impact of the Nigerian diaspora in the UK, especially in the National Health Service, where Nigerian-trained professionals form a significant part of the workforce.

He pointed to global sports figures of Nigerian heritage such as Maro Itoje, Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze, and Anthony Joshua as symbols of the strong human connection between both nations.

Reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to the Commonwealth of Nations, Tinubu described the country as a key player within the 56-member bloc and expressed optimism about its future.

He concluded by toasting to stronger Nigeria-UK relations, expressing hope for deeper collaboration across security, trade, and cultural exchanges.

The state visit, held from March 18 to 19, marks the first by a Nigerian leader to the UK in 37 years, following the 1989 visit by Ibrahim Babangida. It is expected to yield multiple agreements spanning defence, investment, and infrastructure, including a £746 million deal to refurbish key Lagos ports.
