WAEC blames exam delays on fatal accident, logistics challenges

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has explained that delays in the conduct of Mathematics and Agricultural Science papers in some examination centres were caused by logistical and operational challenges, including a fatal road accident involving its personnel.

In a statement issued on Monday by the Head of Public Affairs, Mrs Moyosola Adesina, the examination body disclosed that three officials transporting sensitive examination materials across states lost their lives in the accident, disrupting the planned distribution schedule.

WAEC described the incident as tragic, noting that emergency measures were immediately activated to minimise the impact on affected centres and ensure the examinations were eventually conducted.

“While mourning our fallen colleagues, dedicated staff worked tirelessly around the clock, deploying emergency arrangements that enabled the conduct of examinations across the affected areas,” the council stated.

The examination body also attributed the delays to challenges arising from the finalisation of examination arrangements and late registration of candidates, which affected the preparation and distribution of examination materials.

According to WAEC, security concerns and protests linked to the abduction of schoolchildren in some parts of the country further disrupted movement and delayed the delivery of materials to examination centres.

The council, however, assured candidates, parents and stakeholders that additional measures had been put in place to ensure the smooth conduct of the remaining papers.

It noted that improvements had already been recorded in the administration of examinations conducted on June 5.

WAEC also expressed appreciation to state ministries of education, security agencies and other stakeholders for their support during the exercise.

The council reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the integrity, credibility and smooth administration of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
