FG announces partial opening of Lagos–Calabar Coastal highway December 12

The Federal Government has announced that it will temporarily open Section 1 of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway on Friday, December 12, 2025, to ease traffic movement in Lagos during the festive season.

According to a statement from the Federal Ministry of Works, the 47-kilometre stretch runs from the Ahmadu Bello Way junction to Eleko Village junction.

The opening ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. at Ahmadu Bello Way, Victoria Island.

The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, O. E. Dare, said the move aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s directive to ensure free flow of traffic across the state during the holidays.

Minister of Works, David Umahi, had earlier assured during a project inspection on November 23 that Section 1 would be completed and opened between December 12 and 17.

He added that the section is expected to be fully completed by April 2026, alongside half of Section 2, excluding bridges.

The minister noted that the opening will significantly reduce travel time and costs for commuters along the Lekki-Ajah corridor, who have long endured severe traffic congestion.

“This job must be completed. Everything will be done to provide unfettered access to this section,” Umahi said.

Dany Abboud, Managing Director of Hitech, the project contractor, confirmed that work remains on track.

He said dredging and backfilling are ongoing between Chainage 34 and 37, with close monitoring of settlement in swampy areas.

He assured that the team is working day and night to meet the deadline.

Umahi added that the opening represents a major milestone in the federal government’s efforts to expand road infrastructure and improve connectivity across Nigeria’s coastal regions.
