‘My people don’t fight’: Amaechi slams Obi’s supporters over online attacks

Former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi has lashed out at the supporters of ex-presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, over online criticism, saying he has chosen restraint in the interest of political unity.

Speaking at a town hall meeting in Lagos on Friday, organised by his supporters under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) progressive movement, Amaechi said his camp remains focused on facts rather than personal attacks.

The former two-term governor of Rivers State noted that while social media tensions persist – largely between supporters of Obi and those of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar – his followers have been directed to steer clear of abusive exchanges.

Amaechi explained that the decision not to respond to insults is intentional, aimed at preserving a united front within the opposition ahead of future elections.

Amaechi said: “My people don’t fight. Have you seen any Amaechi person fighting on social media? It is between Atiku people and the Obi people. Obi people are abusing me; we never reply.

“It’s not because we don’t know English or we cannot reply. The reason we don’t reply is that we always want peace.”

He also disclosed that his team has been given strict guidelines to avoid attacking fellow members of the ADC or even the administration of President Bola Tinubu, urging them instead to rely on verifiable facts in public discourse.

“My team is under permanent instruction: don’t abuse anybody in ADC. Even Mr President — don’t abuse the president, show the facts,” said Amaechi, who was a contender in the 2023 presidential primaries of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
