Wike urges PDP aspirants to fight for power ahead of 2027 elections

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has urged candidates seeking elective offices on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2027 general elections to prepare for intense political contests, stressing that power must be fought for and not expected as a gift.

Wike made the remarks on Wednesday during the party’s 109th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja.

Addressing party members, the former Rivers State governor said political power is never handed over freely and advised aspirants to be ready to work hard and make sacrifices to secure electoral victories.

According to him, those seeking public office must be willing to engage in the political process and withstand the challenges that come with contesting elections.

Drawing from his personal political experience, Wike recalled the struggles he faced on his path to becoming governor, noting that he emerged despite competing against an incumbent administration from a different political party.

He advised governorship aspirants and other candidates not to shy away from challenges, describing political competition as a necessary part of the democratic process.

The minister lamented what he described as a culture of entitlement among some party members, arguing that many had become accustomed to relying on others to secure political opportunities for them.

He reminded party faithful that the PDP was no longer the ruling party at the federal level and urged members to remain committed to rebuilding the party.

Wike also cautioned against introducing religious sentiments into politics, encouraging members to focus on grassroots mobilisation and tangible political contributions ahead of the next elections.

He challenged party leaders and members to deliver electoral victories in their respective constituencies and states, saying political relevance should be measured by results rather than rhetoric.

The FCT minister further dismissed concerns over claims by a rival PDP faction led by Tanimu Turaki that it would field candidates for elective offices in 2027.

According to him, legitimacy would ultimately be determined by access to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) nomination portal, expressing confidence that the party leadership would successfully navigate any legal disputes.

Wike also urged PDP members not to be intimidated by political pressure, harassment or threats, insisting that resilience remains essential for political success.

He maintained that the party must remain focused on preparations for the 2027 elections and continue working towards regaining political ground across the country.
