Anthony Joshua crash caused by speeding, overtaking — FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has blamed excessive speed and wrongful overtaking for the road crash involving British boxer Anthony Joshua on the Lagos–Ibadan expressway in Ogun State.

The FRSC spokesperson, Olusegun Ogungbemide, in a statement, disclosed that the accident occurred at about 12 p.m. near the Sinoma area close to Sagamu, Ogun State, on Monday, December 29, 2025.

Ogungbemide said the incident occurred after a Lexus Jeep conveying Joshua collided with a stationary truck parked by the roadside.

The FRSC official said five adult males were involved in the crash, with two persons losing their lives, one sustaining injuries, and two others escaping unhurt.

“Anthony Joshua was rescued alive and sustained minor injuries,” he stated.

Ogungbemide said preliminary investigations revealed that the Lexus Jeep was travelling above the prescribed speed limit and lost control during an overtaking attempt before crashing into the truck.

Ogungbemide said: “Preliminary findings indicate that the Lexus Jeep, which was suspected to be travelling beyond the legally prescribed speed limit on the corridor, lost control during an overtaking manoeuvre and crashed into a stationary truck well packed by the side of the road.

“The primary causes of the crash being excessive speed and wrongful overtaking constitute serious traffic violations and remain among the leading causes of fatal road crashes on Nigerian highways.”

The FRSC spokesperson expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and urged motorists to avoid speeding and dangerous overtaking, warning that such violations remain major causes of fatal crashes on Nigerian highways, especially during the festive period.
